circa Paris, 1795. Six engravings, each approx. 175 x 120 mm. on paper 246 x 190 mm., in excellent handcolouring; additional manuscript captions in an early hand below the plate-mark. An attractive series of handcoloured engravings of eighteenth-century Hawaiians. The artist Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was born in Montreal in 1757 and died in Paris in 1810. Among his best-known work is a series of costume plates done for the Encyclopédie des Voyages, published in Paris in 1795.
These six engravings form the complete series of Grasset's depictions of the Hawaiian race. They are finely coloured and aim to capture the exotic nature and decorative characteristics of these newly-discovered Pacific islands.
