HORSFIELD, T., J.J. BENNETT and R. BROWN
Plantae Javanicae Rariores...
1838- London, 1852. Quarto, folding map and 50 plates; with some faults (see below) but otherwise agood copy in later green cloth, flecked. First edition: one of the most important works on the flora of Java. The American physician worked closely with Sir Thomas Raffles, and was mentored by Banks. He was the first American to conduct research in South East Asia and indeed the first to report discoveries of natural phenomena in Java. He worked for the Dutch initially, but with the defeat of Napoleon power was transferred temporarily in 1811 to the English East India Company, who subsequently employed him. Horsfield spent nearly twenty years working in Java before health problems determined he work in London as keeper of the museum of the East India Company. He brought back to England with him a fine botanical collection; he arranged for Bennett and Brown, both of the Botanical Department of the British Museum, to classify and arrange the specimens for publication in this form. The plates are by C. and J. Curtis, engraved by J. Curtis and E. Weddell. This copy is defective: four pages are in facsimile, two plates are damaged, eight are stained.
