SYDENHAM, Thomas
Dr. Sydenham's Compleat Method...
B. Motte and C. Bathurst etc. London, 1737. Duodecimo; some embrowning and light staining to the text, but a good copy in contemporary sheep, recornered and respined. An enduring English medical classic. Thomas Sydenham (1624-89), known as the father of English medicine or the "English Hippocrates", was the first person to describe measles and scarlet fever, and to introduce the use of quinine for relieving symptoms of malaria.
Sydenham stressed the need for careful observation of patients and recording detailed case histories. His conceptions of the causes and treatments of epidemics and his classic descriptions of gout (based on his own symptoms), smallpox, malaria, scarlet fever, hysteria, and chorea, established him as a founder of modern clinical medicine and epidemiology.
This is the seventh edition of the Compleat Method, which was first published in 1694, five years after his death.
See Wing, S6307 (first edition).
