SYKES, Sir Percy Molesworth
A History of Afghanistan.
Macmillan and Co., London, 1940. Two volumes, octavo, frontispieces, 18 plates and seven folding maps, large folding map in endpocket in second volume; a fine set in original blue cloth with dustjackets. A particularly fine copy, complete with perfect dustjackets, of the very scarce first edition.
Following his lengthy and highly distinguished military and diplomatic career in the Persian region - which won him the respect of locals and Europeans alike - Sykes retired to England to devote himself to his scholarly and literary interests.
The scope of this 'first complete history of Afghanistan' is vast: a detailed history of the region from prehistory and the conquest of the Medes and Persians, to the assassination of Nadir Shah in 1933.
This first edition is unusually hard to find since much of the edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire during the Blitz.
