ROWCROFT, Charles
Fanny the little Milliner.
Routledge & Co., London, 1853. Octavo, pp. [iv], 282, [2] (advertisements) + 12 plates by "Phiz"; uncut in the original fine vertical rib-grain red cloth, both boards decorated in blind, the spine lettered in gilt and decorated with a gilt vignette of the main character (the vignette is repeated centrally in blind on both boards); some slight offsetting, a few signs of use to the cloth but a particularly nice copy. A new edition of a novel first published in 1848 (and rare: we have handled only one copy of the first edition in over twenty years).
With its lively etched illustrations by Dickens's favoured illustrator, "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne), and dealing as it does with social ills, this edition, one suspects, was intended by Routledge (and Rowcroft himself?) to emulate Dickens and benefit from his then exceptional popularity. Expanding on the title-page the binder's title here reads: "Fanny the Little Milliner or the Rich and the Poor".
The list of plates (p. [iii]) notes only ten plates. The two additional "Phiz" plates are located preceding p. 125 ("The Explosion") and facing p. 223 ("The fate of Rebecca").
No edition in Sadleir; no edition in Wolff; this edition not in Ferguson; this edition not in Miller (but noting an edition of 1861).
