RUSSELL, H.C
Description of the Star Camera, at the Sydney Observatory.
S.T Leigh & Co., Sydney, 1892. Quarto, with a photograph and seven large lithograph plates; original red cloth, some browning and a few institutional stamps, a good copy recased with new endpapers. The principal observatories in New South Wales during the nineteenth century were at Sydney and Parramatta, and from the 1890s to the 1930s an astrometric camera was run as a field station by Sydney Observatory at Red Hill, which today is Observatory Park, Pennant Hills. The author of this rare work was the Government Astronomer from 1870, who was responsible for some of the major astronomical programmes undertaken in Australia during the nineteenth century. His book shows details of the camera that was used at Red Hill for photographing the Milky Way and for gaining experience in stellar photography. Russell's work with photography was of great importance: see Holden, Photography in Colonial Australia, pp. 61-3 for further details.
