MAY, E.C

Set of Ten Lithographs.

E.S. Wigg & son, circa Adelaide, 1889. Oblong octavo, ten tinted lithographic plates; preserved in a modern brown folding case. Exceptionally rare: this suite of ten lithographs by George Hamilton and S.T. Gill includes five studies of the Australian Bushman by George Hamilton and five scenes of the goldfields and the outback by S.T. Gill.

In 1839 George Hamilton settled in South Australia where he exhibited in Adelaide's first two art exhibitions. In 1864 the Adelaide Advertiser praised his accurate renderings and said his drawings of horses 'have no equals in the colony'. Five of his drawings were engraved for Eyre's Journals of Discovery into Central Australia and, along with S.T. Gill, his drawings were used to illustrate the published journals of Grey. He owned his own lithographic press and made prints from his drawings which made him, according to Robert Holden, probably the first printmaker in South Australia.
