HUNTER, John
Johan Hunters Resa til Nya Södra Wallis...
Johann Pfeiffer Stockholm, 1797. Small octavo, neat early signature to title-page; a fine copy in contemporary Swedish quarter calf, flat spine embossed in gilt and blind, orange leather label. A particularly attractive copy of this very scarce and important Swedish compendium of accounts of New South Wales and the Pacific. Edited by Samuel Ödmann, who produced a small series of similar works on the South Seas, this is especially notable for including his translation of the surgeon Hamilton's account of the Pandora voyage, the first appearance of this work in Swedish.
Ödmann based the work on Johann Forster's important German-language compendium, the Magazine von Merkwürdigen neuen Reisebeschreibungen of 1794. It includes the first Swedish edition of John Hunter's journal of events at Port Jackson and Philip Gidley King's Norfolk Island journal, both abridged and joined with material from both of Watkin Tench's First Fleet books as well as Hamilton's account of the Pandora voyage.
Ferguson cites three copies: in the Kroepelien collection, the Mitchell Library and the National Library of Australia.
Ferguson, 250; Kroepelien, 916.
