Kaigai Ibun: A strange tale from overseas...

Dawson’s Bookshop, Los Angeles, 1970. Octavo, with numerous colour plates; a fine copy in the original blue cloth. The only edition: one of only 900 copies published, printed by Grant Dahlstrom at the Castle Press, Pasadena, and issued as number 20 in the "Baja California Travels Series". This fascinating work covers the tale of the castaway Japanese sailor Hatsutaro. Lost off Hyogo, Japan the crew of thirteen men sailed south-east without rudder for some six months to be rescued by a Spanish vessel, and then dropped off in Baja California, at San Jose del Cabo. They went to Mazatlan, and eventually boarded a ship bound for Canton, and then back to Japan. This is a surprising book, notable for its curious observations on America.
