Two volumes, octavo, with a chart, a large folding map (laid down on linen) and plates (four of newly-discovered birds are handcoloured - the Rose Cockatoo is a mounted India paper proof copy before letters); a good copy, uncut in modern half calf. First edition of this account of Sturt's two crucial expeditions into the interior and along the Darling and Murray rivers. During the first, which set out to trace the course of the Macquarie River, Sturt discovered and named long sections of the Darling, whilst in the second, which aimed to explore the Lachlan-Murrumbidgee river system, he did the same for the Murray River. This account of over four thousand miles of exploration carried out in four years was written while Sturt was in England, undergoing treatment for the blindness that had struck him during the voyage home.
