HODGKINSON, Clement
Australia, from Port Macquarie to Moreton Bay...
T. & W. Boone, London, 1845. Octavo, with plates and a full-page map; a good copy in an extremely rare late variant binding of plum cloth, rebacked in calf with the original spine retained and new endpapers; the F.G. Coles copy. Clement Hodgkinson, a young engineer and surveyor, was contracted by the New South Wales government to survey and explore the north-eastern section of the state through to Moreton Bay. His survey was the first extensive exploration of the area since its discovery by Oxley over twenty years before.
Between 1840 and 1842 Hodgkinson surveyed the Macleay, Clarence and Hastings rivers and the Port Macquarie district. Further north he mapped the Richmond and Tweed rivers as well as the district around Brisbane and Moreton Bay.
His account provides much interesting information about the natural history of the area and the Aboriginal tribes of south-east Queensland and New South Wales, including observations of "Australian Field Sports" such as kangaroo hunting, the dingo hunt and the emu chase.
