John Murray, London, 1876. Octavo, with a folding map (early tape repairs) and six plates and charts; small ink stain on front marbled endpaper; a very good copy in contemporary half calf, gilt decorated spine, slight wear to extremities. The scarce first edition, in nice condition.
The expeditions of HMS Basilisk placed more than one hundred and forty islands and many excellent harbours on the chart. Moresby's book, which has always been popular, includes material on the Torres Strait, Black-Birding, a Corroboree, Norfolk Island, Rotumah, Santa Cruz, Ambrym, Pentecost, the discovery of Port Moresby and Fairfax Harbour, Yule Island, the D'Entrecasteaux Group, the discovery of China Straits, taking conditional possession of newly-discovered islands, discovery of Milne Bay, Killerton Group, finding the true East Cape of New Guinea, and much more.
