STRZELECKI, Paul Edmund de
Physical Description of New South Wales...
Longmans, London, 1845. Octavo, with handcoloured folding map and plates (three tinted lithographs and one folding), 32 pp. inserted advertisements dated March 31, 1845; a fine copy in the original plum cloth, spine slightly sunned. Author's presentation copy.
This is the first edition of the narrative of a 7000-mile excursion through eastern Australia undertaken by the famous Polish geologist. Count Strzelecki travelled on foot with James Macarthur and a small party through New South Wales and across the Australian Alps, making the first ascent of Mount Kosciusko, which he named. Next he advanced into Gippsland, which he named and claimed (falsely) to have discovered, and then into Tasmania.
Strzelecki's book marked the foundation of Australian palaeontology, and he was awarded the founder's medal of the Royal Geographical Society in London. The geological map is one of the earliest attempts to produce such a map of any part of Australia.
This exemplary copy in the original cloth binding is inscribed "From the Author" on the front flyleaf.
