DICKENS, Charles
The life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby...
Chapman & Hall, London, 1839. Octavo, frontispiece portrait of Dickens by Finden after Maclise and 39 plates by Hablot K. Browns ("Phiz'), plates foxed as usual; half black morocco, marbled edges and endpapers, spine decorated in gilt, no half-title, re-hinged. First edition, bound from parts. Of the two critical issue points "latter" at p. 160 is present, but at p. 123 the correction to "sister" has been effected.
An early novel in Dickens's oeuvre, and the work with the most stylistic similarities with his first novel Pickwick Papers, it also continued his trademark and innovative use of the oppressed child as nexus of social criticism.
With the bookplate of the Dickens collector B.W. Matz.
Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 129-160; Sadleir, 695.
