PADMORE, G. (?)
Original watercolour of Mosman, Sydney.
Sydney, 1889. Original watercolour, 185 x 280 mm.; a few light spots, otherwise in very good condition, signed and dated lower right. Charming watercolour of Mosman, showing a cottage on the harbour foreshore, and a hint of the gabled roof of Oswald Bloxsome's home, The Rangers, peeping up from behind the trees.
Richard Hayes Harnett Snr was a major influence in the early development of Mosman, as was his son, Richard Harnett Jnr. The elder Harnett purchased Archibald Mosman's original one hundred and eight acres in 1859. Over the next thirty years he was responsible for building many roads, a horse-drawn bus service and ferry services linking the centre of Sydney with Mosman. Pleasure grounds and picnic resorts sprang up around the foreshore to cater for the visitors who flocked to the area. In 1878 Harnett established a sandstone quarry at Mosman Bay, producing first-class quality sandstone which was used in historic buildings throughout Australia.
This watercolour was executed at a time of expansion and achievement in the Mosman district, with the building of Mosman Public School and the Congregational Church, along with the establishment of postal and water services.
Soon after this watercolour was completed, the residents of Mosman became part of a new and separate municipality. The boundaries then established remain unaltered to this day.
