DUMONT D'URVILLE, Jules Sebastien

Verldsomseglaren, eller sammandrag af de upptacktsresor...

Ecksteinska Boktryckeriet, 1836- Stockholm, 1839. Eight volumes bound in seven, duodecimo; a very attractive set in contemporary patterned wrappers, slightly rubbed, with hand-lettered papered spine labels. Rare Swedish edition of Dumont d'Urville's historical account of voyages around the world from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, from Magellan, Tasman and Dampier to Cook, La Pérouse and Flinders. Written in the form of an idealised world voyage, the details of places on the voyage are drawn from virtually all the major explorers, from Magellan to Laplace and including even the inland explorers. Although the publication uses the very commercial name of the voyaging hero Dumont d'Urville, it seems to have been a classic piece of nineteenth-century ghost writing. It was a very successful publication and went through numerous editions and translations.

Despite the long section devoted to Australia (Vol. VI, pp. 848-1049), this edition was not recorded by Ferguson (who does note French, German and Russian editions); nor is it recorded by Sabin, who does list a number of other versions (see 21211-21215). The French original was first published in 1834.

This Swedish version appeared over three years and a long list of subscribers to the work appears in the first volume.
