IRVINE, Robert Francis

Bubbles His Book.

n.d., but Sydney, 1899. Quarto, colour frontispiece and 15 colour illustrations; a very good copy in the original decorated blue cloth over bevelled boards. First edition of this landmark in Australian book production.

Almost two decades before colour printing in Australian children's books became commonplace, Bubbles His Book appeared to great acclaim. The lavish format, with its full-page colour plates, showcased the work of the highly-talented Bulletin artist D.H. Souter. Bubbles is a testament not only to Souter's skill as an artist, but also his mastery of book design in which the cover, endpapers, illustrations and typography are all a cohesive and stylish entity. The reviewer in the Sydney Morning Herald praised it: 'Indeed the book is perhaps the most ambitious effort of an Australian [publishing] house by Australian men for Australian children' (Holden, A Golden Age: Visions of Fantasy).

A year after its appearance in Australia, Bubbles was reissued in London, 'the first time an Australian children's illustrated book was so validated by an appreciative English audience' (Holden).
