BLIGH, William

Rélation de l'enlèvement du Navire Le Bounty...

Firmin Didot & Gabriel Dufour Paris & Amsterdam, 1790. Octavo, without the half-title sometimes seen, the three folding maps crisp; contemporary French marbled sheep, flat spine gilt in compartments; wear to front joint and to extremities, but a handsome copy. First French edition of Bligh's own account of the mutiny on the Bounty: had Christian been reading books from Paris at this time he might have been surprised to see his famous lament to Bligh rendered as 'Je suis en enfer, je suis en enfer'.

Translated by Daniel Escallier from the London edition. Escallier, as the title-page notes, had several positions in Guiana, and was a correspondent of the Société Royale d'Agriculture in Paris. The work is preceded by his brief introduction, in which he introduces the story of Bligh and the Bounty, and explains why he has dispensed with the frontispiece plan of the open boat from the London edition, replacing it with a table of dimensions. The work includes good versions of the three original charts, newly engraved.

Like the other international editions of Bligh's Narrative, this is a scarce work.
Ferguson, 73; Kroepelien, 89; not in the catalogue of the Hill collection; O'Reilly-Reitman, 546; Spence, 'Bligh', p. 2.
