TOUANNE, Vicomte de la
Album pittoresque de la frégate La Thétis et de la corvette l'Espérance...
Bulla, Paris, 1828. Folio, with 35 lithographic plates (including seven vignettes in the text); some spotting but an extremely good and large, uncut copy in contemporary marbled boards, slightly rubbed; original publisher's wrapper pasted as large label to front cover. A fine series of views, with an accompanying text, separately issued nine years before the official account of this voyage.
Hyacinthe de Bougainville sailed as an eighteen-year-old ensign on the Baudin voyage. After distinguished service in the Napoleonic Wars, he was given command of the Thétis, only the second French frigate to be commissioned for a circumnavigation, the first having been his father's vessel the Boudeuse.
The voyage took twenty-eight months, visiting amongst other places Pondicherry, Manila, Macao, Surabaya, Sydney (a stay of almost three months), Valparaiso and Rio. Bougainville returned to France with a fine collection of natural history specimens, and the official account of the voyage was eventually handsomely published after a delay of some eleven years, nine years after this unofficial account.
Edmond de la Touanne, a friend and protégé of De Bougainville (and referred to in Bougainville's journal as 'faithful companion of my travels'), sailed on the expedition as lieutenant de vaisseau. Because of the haste with which the expedition was manned, no official artist was sent; as Bougainville remarks, no pictorial record of the expedition would have survived but for De la Touanne's sketches.
This rare and beautiful voyage album is not recorded by Ferguson despite considerable Australian content, including three wonderful views of the Nepean River.
Hill, 161.
