BULKELEY, John and John CUMMINS
A Voyage to the South Seas, in the Years 1740-1...
Jacob Robinson, London, 1743. Octavo; some slight embrowning, but a very good copy in contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked, endpapers renewed. First edition of one of the classic stories of shipwreck survival. This famous account by the gunner and the carpenter on the Wager describes the wreck of the ship, one of Anson's fleet, off the coast of Chile, the survivors' life on shore, and their subsequent voyage in a longboat through the Straits of Magellan to Rio de Janeiro. As Spate has remarked, 'For wild drama, or melodrama, very few tales of the sea can match this of the Wager'.
Like Anson's own official account of the expedition this was a popular book and went through a number of editions. There were two editions in the first year of publication, one as here giving the authors' names on the title-page and the other anonymously published.
Hill, 210; James Ford Bell, B603.
