BULKELEY, John and John CUMMINS, and others

Voyage à la mer du Sud...

les Freres Duplain, Lyon, 1756. Quarto, title printed in red & black, title vignette and another fine vignette at start of text; title and half-title slightly browned, but a fine copy in a handsome contemporary French binding of mottled calf, ruled in gilt, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, marbled edges, red silk marker. First French edition of this important supplement to the Anson accounts, collecting various accounts of the loss of the Wager and subsequent events from the officers involved, including the narratives of Bulkeley and Cummins (London 1743), Alexander Campbell (Dublin 1747), John Young (London 1751), and Isaac Morris (Dublin 1752).

Bulkeley and Cummins, respectively the gunner and carpenter of the doomed vessel, had led the mutinous faction which refused to accompany Cheap, Byron and others northward after the shipwreck, preferring instead to head back through the Straits of Magellan. After marooning several of their number they finally reached safety in Brazil from whence they returned to England.

Various versions of this compiled text appeared subsequently including Dutch and German translations.
Borba de Moraes, p. 39; Kroepelien, 1084.
