STUART, Martinus
De Mensch zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden Aardbol...
J. Allart, 1802- Amsterdam, 1807. Six volumes, octavo, with a coloured frontispiece, coloured vignette on title-page of each volume, and altogether 41 coloured plates and two folding uncoloured lithographs; old cancelled library stamps (Yale University); a good set in old half calf, rebacked. A fine set of the first edition with a splendid series of forty-one plates of different ethnic types, printed in colours and finished by hand. This famous anthropological work was 'the first Dutch treatise on geographical anthropology... Quite a few plates are after the travel accounts of Captain Cook, La Pérouse, Carver, Levaillant, etc...' (Landwehr). A German version appeared a few years later and another Dutch version came out in the 1830s.
There are separate sections on different countries: the Pacific is very well represented, occupying more than a third of the work and its illustrations. There is a separate section on Van Diemen's Land while "New Holland" is the only chapter in a section entitled "Australia", a very early use of the term which is traditionally said not to have been used until Flinders' narrative, published in 1814, suggested it as a term for the continent.
Landwehr, 447; Lipperheide, Ma9; Teile, 1065.
