DALRYMPLE, Alexander
Scheme of a Voyage to Convey the Conveniences of Life, Domestic Animals, Corn, Iron, &c., to New Zeland.
James Dally Hobart, 1971. Sextodecimo, 16 pp.; fine copy in the original cloth with paper label to front cover. A lovely private press edition of Dalrymple's plan to assist the 'brave and generous race' of New Zealand, 'who are destitute of Corn, Fowls, and all Quadrupeds except Dogs'.
Originally published in a now very rare 8 page quarto in 1771, this work is of great Australasian interest. Essentially a prospectus, the work was sent by Dalrymple to people he thought might be likely to subscribe to a voyage that he costed at some ?15,000. 'So keen was the interest excited by Cook's account of New Zealand that this odd scheme was devised to help the poor natives. Perhaps Dalrymple's jealousy of Cook was the motif, as the former offered and expected to command the expedition. At any rate, it is the first systematic proposal to connect the two countries' (Hocken).
Printed at the Nag's Head Press in Christchurch in an edition of 150 numbered copies; this is number 11.
Hocken, p. 9 (1771 edition).
