COOKE, George

Scenery of China, Turkey, Etc. A Series of Views of the Most Remarkable Localities......

Longmans, London, 1811. Oblong quarto, with 25 copper-engraved plates; original buff wrappers, lettered on the front cover within a decorative border, cloth spine; covers slightly browned and rubbed, some plates with light spots and marginal tears, generally a good copy. First edition: a selection of engravings including views of Nankin, Pekin, the Great Wall of China, the Plain of Troy, Siphanto, the mountains of Caucasus and various Turkish scenes ultimately used to illustrate Pinkerton's General Collection of the Best & Most Interesting Voyages & Travels (1808-1814). This is an early work by Cooke, a prominent line-engraver in the early-nineteenth century, best known for his engraved views of London and England. Cooke engraved many of Turner's drawings for the Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England. In 1826 he began his favourite work, Views in London and its Vicinity, which ended with the twelfth number before his death; and in 1833 produced Views of the Old and New London Bridges after drawings by his son Edward William Cooke. He was one of the original members of the Society of Associated Engravers.

This separate issue of the engravings, predating the completion of Pinkerton's publication, is surprisingly rare: it is not recorded in the Blackmer catalogue despite its obvious interest, while NUC locates a single copy.
