DELANO, Amasa

A Narrative of Voyages and Travels...

Printed by E.G. House, Boston, 1817. Octavo, two engraved plates and a folding map of Pitcairn Island; with foxing and staining throughout as in all copies, but a good example in contemporary marbled calf, flat spine gilt in compartments, slightly rubbed. First edition. Delano describes three important Pacific voyages between 1790 and 1807, including visits to China, New Guinea, the East Indies, India, Chile, Australia, and Hawaii. The most celebrated aspect of the book is the long section on Bligh, the Bounty, and Pitcairn's Island - really the first published account of the fate of the mutineers - which includes the first publication of several manuscripts, including one by Captain Edwards of the Pandora and others by Folger, who discovered the mutineers on Pitcairn and interviewed Adams himself.

Delano is also interesting on the history of Tasmania: he met Collins in 1803 shortly after his arrival at the Derwent. Sealing in Bass Strait, he found himself an early subject of protectionism by a Port Jackson gang who considered he had no right to be there. The Australian section contains natural history notes - one of the earliest sources of such knowledge for American readers - while the description of sealing in Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania is one of the earliest to survive.
