HOLDEN, Horace
A Narrative of the Shipwreck, Captivity and Sufferings of Horace Holden & Benj. H. Nute...
Russell, Shattuck and Co., Boston, 1836. Duodecimo, with two wood-engraved plates; original cloth. First Edition: a sad tale of "confusion, horror and dismay". The Mentor sailed from New Bedford under Captain Edward Barnard in 1831, and wrecked the following year in the Pelews. About half the crew were killed perished, the remainder being mistreated by the inhabitants of Lord North's Island, who also tattooed them as was their custom. Melville's discussion of tattooing in Typee is probably derived from this account. The book also includes a vocabulary of the language of Lord North's Island.
Forster, 56; Hill, p. 147; Huntress, 277C; Starbuck, p. 282; Whaling Masters', p. 47.
