Three volumes, large octavo, with many maps, plates and illustrations; folding map in a pocket of the binding; original green cloth gilt, a little rubbing to joints but a fine, bright set. First edition: the only major Austrian exploring expedition. Scherzer, author of this narrative, was one of the naturalists on the expedition, in charge of ethnography, linguistics, anthropology and statistics. This is the rare official account of this important voyage to the Pacific, which was commanded by Captain Bernard von Wüllerstorf-Urbair. Archduke Maximilian was patron of the voyage.
There was also an abridged version published in the same year, and the numerous later editions included English and Italian versions.
