POUJADE, Jean

Documents d'ethnographie navale (series-title).

Gauthier-Villars, 1946- Paris, 1948. Six fascicles, with in total nine folding plates, seven photographic reproductions, and many illustrations (some in colour); the five studies in their original light blue printed wrappers, the introductory fascicle in the original dusky pink printed wrapper; some very light foxing to the wrappers, but all very good. A lovely set of these important works of naval architecture, forming a series on boat construction around the world. The series was planned as a supplement (in many ways a successor) to the well-known work by Admiral François-Edmond Paris, Souvenirs de Marine Conservés, ou Collection de Plans de Navires et de Bateaux de tous les Pays, first published in 1877. The first fascicle includes an index to Paris' main work, and reprints his five plates on the Bateaux de Cochinchine.

Each of the fascicles gives a detailed account of boat-building techniques, with titles Les Jonques des Chinois du Siam, Pirogues et ca-vom de l'ouest Cochinchinois, Les Barques de Mer de Rachgia, La Machoua de Versova and Les Barques du moyen Niger. It was an ambitious project, planned under the direction of the Centre de Recherche Culturelle de la Route des Indes in Djibouti, and the series was also to have encompassed parts on "ethnographie terrestre" and "archéologie terrestre". However when the Parisian publisher Gauthier-Villars closed, the project stalled. These five initial fascicles, together with the sixth introductory part, appear to have been all that were published.
