WELLS, Margaret

Maori Moths

Harry H. Tombs, Limited, circa Wellington, 1931. Quarto, five plates (one coloured), bookplate; a good copy in original paper boards, a little bumped; spine worn. A handsome copy of this story of tiny fairies in verse and prose.

As with white artists working in Australia, so New Zealand-based writers and illustrators drew upon their local environment to create children's fairy literature. This imaginative work is wonderfully illustrated by Edna B. Kaula and tells of the "Maori Moths", the shy, indigenous fairies of Aotearoa, in their tussles with Giants (in the form of sleeping volcanoes) and terrible dragons lurking in volcanic pits.

The plates are mostly black & white, although bordered with red scrollwork designs derived from the Maori Tiki and Kowhaiwhai motifs. Additionally, there are many black & white illustrations sprinkled through the text as well as playfully executed titles and tailpieces.
