COXE, William
A Comparative View of the Russian Discoveries with those made by Captains Cook and Clerke...
J. Nichols, London, 1787. Quarto, 32 pp., with the half-title and the final leaf of postscript and errata; a fine copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt, rebacked, blue morocco label. The quarto first edition, separately printed, and extremely rare. It was issued in this format for owners of either of the two 1780 editions of Coxe's Account of the Russian Discoveries, to which it refers. Later octavo editions of the complete work (1787 and 1804) included this supplement as part of the text.
'This exceedingly rare pamphlet' (Holmes) was dedicated to the famous German naturalist and expert on Russia, Peter Simon Pallas, who had recently completed his important collection Neue Nordische Beyträge. Indeed, Coxe's work was largely devoted to translations from the scarce German reports on the recent discoveries in Russia, not least because he had visited experts on the region such as Pallas and G.F. Müller in person. This supplement is an important advance in Coxe's work, and as he explains, 'the author would have arranged, at a more early period, the following Comparative View, which seems necessarily connected with his former publication on the Russian Discoveries; if he had not been absent from England when Cook's Voyage first made its appearance; and if continued travels and avocations had not prevented him from consulting those books, charts, and manuscripts, which the examination of so intricate a subject required...'.
The advertisement present here on page [viii], advertising the forthcoming octavo edition, which included both his 1780 Account of the Russian Discoveries and this 1787 supplement, makes it clear that this separately issued quarto supplement was printed first.
Holmes, 64; not in Kroepelien; not in Lada-Mocarski, (but see 29); not in the catalogue of the Hill collection; not recorded by Beddie.
