BLIGH, William

The Log of the Bounty...

Golden Cockerel Press London, 1937. Two volumes, small folio, four engravings on wood by Lynton Lamb; untrimmed, bookplate of Sally and Rockwell Kent; a fine set in the original quarter red "sail-type" linen binding, very slightly rubbed. Limited edition of just three hundred copies: this is a fine copy of the most significant of the five Golden Cockerel Press editions relating to Bligh edited by Owen Rutter in the 1930s. The attractive engravings on wood are by Lynton Lamb.

This is a printed version of Bligh's Log in the Admiralty Library, and the first such complete edition to be published. The Hill catalogue attests to its importance, noting that 'this log contains many important passages which do not appear in either of Bligh's previously published books, as well as information patiently collected on the social life of the Tahitians. Much of the technical detail is of great interest to those who care for ships and the sea...'.

As well as Rutter's introduction and notes, the edition also includes comments on Bligh's navigation by Rear-Admiral J.A. Edgell, Hydrographer of the Navy.

Pertelote (the second part of the bibliography of the Golden Cockerel Press) notes that this was one of the most technically demanding books that the press produced.
Hill, 141; Pertelote, 117; Spence, 'Bligh', p.3.
