BLIGH, William
Bligh's Voyage in the Resource...
Golden Cockerel Press London, 1937. Small folio, with chart and page of log in facsimile, engravings on wood by Peter Barker-Mill; a few inoffensive spots; original blue and fawn cloth, a little rubbed; an excellent copy. A fine limited edition from the Golden Cockerel Press, with engravings by Peter Barker-Mill. The narrative of Bligh's homeward journey from Batavia was prepared by the Bligh scholar Owen Rutter from the manuscripts in the Mitchell Library, and was the first time these journals were published.
Neither Bligh's log of this voyage, nor the record of his passage back to England, appear to have been among the papers handed over to the Admiralty and Rutter's search for them in the Public Records Office was in vain. While the whereabouts of the originals are not known, Rutter was delighted to find that the manuscript copies at the Mitchell Library had been certified by Bligh himself, and used them as the basis for this important work.
Published in May 1937, the note in Pertelote (the bibliography of the Golden Cockerel Press) comments that this edition, which describes Bligh's voyage home in the Resource and Vlydt packet, was prepared 'to round off the events described in the Log of the Bounty'. This was the fourth of the Golden Cockerel editions of works relating to Bligh and the Bounty. The edition was limited to three hundred and fifty copies.
