JUKES, J. Beete

Popular Physical Geology...

Reeve & Co. London, 1853. Octavo, 20 tinted lithograph plates; a good copy in the original blindstamped and gilt green cloth, with advertisements. Joseph Beete Jukes, best known in an Australian context as the naturalist and chronicler of the survey expedition of HMS Fly, was in fact a geologist. During his time in Australia (1842-5) he carried out major geological investigations which led to his highly important discoveries on the nature of the Great Barrier Reef - which formed a chapter in the official Narrative of the Surveying Voyage of HMS Fly. On his return to England he published A Sketch of the Physical Structure of Australia, which contained the first geological map of the continent.

This present volume was intended as a popular guide to geology for a general audience. Despite its number of references to Australian geology, it is not recorded by Ferguson.
Not in Ferguson.
