Bertha as She Appeared". Sketch of an arriving immigrant chatting to a kangaroo.
London, 1881. Ink sketch on paper, folded in half to 115 x 179mm.; in fine condition. A charming and somewhat intriguing ink sketch of a young boy (girl?) chatting with a kangaroo, with two brolgas (then known as "native companions") in the background. The caption reads: 'How are you? And How's your cough? I've just arrived'; what this means or why this young person is flourishing a lit cigarette is a mystery. On the verso is the inscription: 'Bertha as she appeared - by Alexander Rowan - London Aug. 1881'. Perhaps the illustration was intended for a book or periodical, although this name does not appear in the standard bibliographies.

All items are guaranteed as described. If an item is not as described, it is returnable within seven days of receipt, unless other arrangements are made. Full refunds are given only when items are received in the same condition in which they were sent.
