[TERRY, Frederick C.]
Landscape Scenery, illustrating Sydney...
Sands & Kenny Sydney & Melbourne, 1855. Oblong quarto, engraved title-page and 38 engraved plates; a little light foxing but a very good copy in the original red cloth, recased; front cover ornately decorated in gilt with lettering "Australian Keepsake 1855" at centre; gilt edges. Frederick Terry was one of the better landscape artists working in Sydney during the mid-nineteenth century. Influenced by Martens, his work was included in the Paris Exhibition of 1855, the first showing of Australian pictures in Paris. In the finely executed oval engravings that comprise this album, Terry captures the mood of his landscape in a method similar to that employed by the English artist, Birket Foster, succeeding in capturing "the romantic beauty of the unrivalled Harbour of Port Jackson".
This copy has the plate "Double Bay from Old South Head Road" which is often absent, and the errata slip.
