CORNISH, Henry

Under the Southern Cross.

Higginbotham and Co., Madras, 1880. Octavo, folding map and six full-page plates; a good copy in the original blue cloth. Scarce Indian-published work on Australia, which sets out to "direct attention to the advantages of a closer intercourse, commercial and otherwise, between India and Australia" (Preface). Most interestingly the book is illustrated with fine engravings of Australian scenery by R. F. Chisholm of the Madras School of Arts.

Chapters include details of a voyage from Galle to King George's Sound, and a good description of Western Australia describing agricultural conditions, the pearl fisheries and pearl divers. The writer then travels extensively through all the Australian states, and gives an excellent description of life in the country. He devotes a whole chapter to "Sports and Pastimes" and includes in this cricket and horse racing as well as theatre and bushranging! There is a most interesting chapter titled "The Indian Coolie as a Colonist".

This edition is much expanded on the first, published six years previously, and covers the development of trade between the two countries over this period.
