JENKINS, John S

Voyage of the U.S. Exploring Squadron...

J.M. Alden Auburn (New York), 1850. Large octavo, engraved title and eight steel-engraved plates; some browning and spotting as is typical of American books of this period; original full calf, spine repaired. A condensation for the general reader of the Wilkes expedition and several earlier and important voyages. Part one, on expeditions in the Pacific and the South Seas, contains eighteen exhaustive chapters that include long references to Australian forests, agriculture, horticulture, dwelling houses, reptiles and fish. Gold discoveries in California are noted.

Part two covers Lynch's expedition to the Dead Sea. This expedition, on the Supply, was approved by the Secretary of the Navy and left the Brooklyn Navy Yard for the Syrian coast in November 1847.
