BARKER, Fordyce
On Sea-Sickness.
D. Appleton and Company New York, 1878. Duodecimo; in original green cloth with title in gilt, all edges gilt, some wear to spine but very good. An attractive copy of Barker's intriguing short work on cases of sea-sickness experienced in numerous places including the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and during Atlantic crossings. The piece was first printed as an article in the New York Medical Jounal in 1868. This edition was printed with additions from the author on prescriptions for relief after the article had received much response.
Benjamin Fordyce Barker (1818-1891) was a well known physician who obtained a charter for Bellevue Hospital Medical School in New York City in 1861, where he was Professor of Obstetrics and Disease. A work produced by Barker a short time after On Sea-Sickness was Perpetual Disease: Clinical Lectures (1874). In Barker's later life he was said to have attended American President James Garfield.
