Philips' New Series of Travelling Maps. Victoria with Index (cover title).

George Philip & Son, c. London & Liverpool, 1885. Slim octavo pocketbook map, map disected and mounted on linen, 655 x 540 mm., printed index; in the original red cloth binding, cover title in black and gilt lettering, some minor wear to spine, a few marks on linen backing, a very good copy. An attractive pocket map from Philips' New Series of Travelling Maps, showing late nineteenth-century Victoria. Philips published a number of maps of Australia which were produced in England, chiefly for emigrants to the gold fields, continuing to produce these significant maps for many years.

There are a few clues to the dating of this map, most prominently the marking of the submarine cable from Cape Schank to Low Head, Tasmania, which was completed in May 1869. Also marked are many of the railway routes in the state, including the route of the Great Southern Railway from Sydney to Albury (completed 1881) and the Victorian Railways continuation to Melbourne (1883). It is not immediately clear, however, whether these are simply projections of the planned routes, hence our date can only be considered tentative. The only copy we have been able to compare is held in the National Library of Australia and dated 1864. It is clear that the present version is a later printing, as the railway and submarine cable details, necessarily, are not marked on the Library's copy.

Apart from the copy of this map in the NLA, noted above, copies are known to be held in the State Library of New South Wales and the State Library of Victoria. Interestingly, a few similar maps are noted by Ferguson, who noted seven similarly styled Philips maps, six in single copies only.

At some point a tentative voyage track from, approximately, Wilson Promontory to King Island has been marked in blue pencil.
