BLIGH, William
Seven Printed Legal Documents dealing with Land in the Estate of William Bligh.
Battye, Fisher & Sudlow, June 1838 - January London, 1840. Seven printed legal documents, all individually stitch-sewn and folded into dockets, some legal marginalia in lead and blue pencil chiefly relating to the property "Copenhagen"; a little dusted and a few tears, but very good. A good set of printed legal documents relating to the sale of Bligh's properties in New South Wales.
The sale, as these papers show, was first announced in 1838 for the benefit of his six living children. 'Bligh died intestate as to his estate in New South Wales. Probate was afterwards granted on the application of Charles Hallett, Proctor, and Felix Slade, Attorney. The share of Anne, described as a "lunatic", was vested in trustees for her benefit.' (George Mackaness, The Life of Vice-Admiral Bligh, pp. 340-1).
Interestingly, one of the people granted power-of-attorney in Sydney with regards to this sale was Stuart Donaldson, later the first premier of New South Wales (his name is given in the printed text as "Thomas", but struck out with a manuscript correction).
The first and most significant record present here is dated 22 June 1838, and gives details of the six children, beginning with William's and Elizabeth's eldest daughter Elizabeth. This also contains details of the five main properties at stake: Copenhagen (1000 acres in the Upper Nelson), his residence Camperdown (240 acres), the property known as Mount Betham (105 acres in Parramatta), and two properties on the Hawkesbury, Simpson's Farm (110 acres) and Tylor's Farm (two separate allotments, 170 acres in total).
Also present here are two copies of the 30 November 1839 "Consent to Sale", one copy of the 29 July 1839 Act dealing with the sixth share of 'Ann Campbell Bligh, Spinster, a Lunatic', and three copies of the 24 January 1840 granting of power-of-attorney in New South Wales to Stuart Alexander Donaldson and John William Gosling, both of Sydney. It is distinctly possible that this suite of documents was originally held by someone involved in the processing of "Copenhagen" in particular, as the few manuscript notes in these printed documents deal chiefly with this property.
