HONDIUS, Henricus

India quae Orientalis dicitur et Insulae Adiacentes.

Amsterdam, 1649. Engraved map, handcoloured, 390 x 482 mm.; in fine condition, mounted. A fine early map, showing Dutch discoveries in northern Australia. The map-maker Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) inherited his father's famous Amsterdam map publishing business in 1612. Initially he worked with his brother Jodocus II, but after 1619 he was in partnership with Jan Jansson.

Hondius is known for three seventeenth-century maps which are important in the history of Australian cartography - this one, his India quae Orientalis, the circular Polus Antarcticus, and his world map which is the first dated map in an atlas to show any of the Australian coastline.

India quae Orientalis extends from India in the north to Japan in the east, and as far south to show a rudimentary northern Australia, lettered "'Tlandt van d'Eendracht", and the western side of Cape York Peninsula. India quae Orientalis was first published in 1638 (illustrated as plate 55 in Tooley), and in a number of editions in the years up to 1700. Any edition of this beautiful map is rare; this example with the text in Latin on verso, dates from 1649.
Tooley, 721.
