STEWART, Alexander.

Philip's Progressive Series of Copy Books.

George Philip & Son, Melbourne, 0. Four volumes, small quarto; very good in original decorative wrappers. Four early-twentieth-century writing text books, two for Australian children, in very good condition. Such ephemeral educational works rarely survive in such condition.

The set consists partly of two copies of the Australian Copy Book, for the Third and Fourth Grade respectively. The covers of these two texts are profusely decorated with native Australian animals and scenes of early industry and settlement. Within are repetitious exercises, designed to train the child's hand to create the formal writing style of the day and ending with a series of proverbs to be copied, including such timeless pearls as "Too far East is West" and "Out of debt, out of Danger". The other two texts are copies of the Australian Printing Copy Book, a more formal training work, designed to teach legal clerks and cartographers the most commonly employed font styles used in the production of various official documents, including land grants and wills.
