SAINSON, M. de

Habitans du Port du Roi Georges.

Tastu, Paris, 1833. Lithograph, 225 x 320 mm.; fine and mounted. Fine original lithograph from the official account of the Dunont d'Urville expedition, depicting a group of West Australian Aborigines roasting lizards over a fire.

Louis de Sainson, the topographical draughtsman travelling with the expedition, made many detailed studies of the local inhabitants of King George Sound from 15 to 25 October 1826. King George Sound proved a perfect watering place for the expedition with an abundance of fresh water, firewood and a safe anchorage.

A study was carried out involving overnight stays of Aborigines on board the Astrolabe as well as reciprocal visits ashore by members of the French contingent. This image was published as part of the official account of Dumont d'Urville's expedition in the Astrolabe and was included in the landmark Colonial Eye exhibition held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1979.
