DRAKE, Sir Francis

Drake's Plate of Brass. Evidence of his Visit to California in 1579.

California Historical S., 1937. Large octavo, illustrations, two folding maps; a fine copy in the original cloth. Sir Francis Drake became infamous as a haranguer of the Spanish Fleet, as a privateer carrying letters of marque signed by his queen, Elizabeth the First. While holding an earlier command as captain of the Golden Hinde, he sailed around the world and, in 1579, he nailed a brass plate to a tree in California as proof of his visit there. This plate, boldly declaring that the current occupants "freely resigne their right and title in the whole land unto herr maiesties keeping", names the land "Nova Albion" and includes a hole rudely cut to allow the siting of a sixpence, in lieu of any other indicator of her majesty's presence.

This work is an examination of the famous Drake relic after its rediscovery in 1936, 357 years later. Produced separately from the scientific analysis of the artefact in a companion volume, this is a well-produced book, handsomely designed by Lawton R. Kennedy.
