MELVILLE, Henry
Van Diemen's Land...
Smith Elder, London, 1833. Duodecimo; a good copy in the original grained cloth, slightly stained, printed paper label (rubbed). Influential emigrants' guide for Tasmania, by the controversial Hobart publisher and writer who had arrived on the island in 1827. Ferguson notes two binding issues, with another in quarter cloth and boards. He calls this the "secondary" issue on the basis of the bibliographer Carter's remark that ribbed cloth was "pretty certainly introduced about 1836". Whether Ferguson was right or wrong, either issue of this important little book about Tasmania is scarce on the market today.
