Wrexham: Printed by R. Marsh. 1786 Contemporary boards, rebacked preserving the original spine andpaper label. The Ladies of Llangollen's copy, a contemporary note on the front free-endpaper reading, "Bought at the Rt. Hon Lady Eleanor Butler & Miss Ponsonby's sale Aug. 1832." The first item, William Combe's "The First of April" has a number of autograph manuscript notes in the hand of Lady Eleanor Butler identifying the persons in the poem. Also in her autograph are a few biographical details such as their lineage, year of marriage, death, etc. (Some of these notes have been cropped by the binder with the loss of a few letters, but almost all remain legible.) The second and the fourth items have, fittingly, a specific Welsh connection. Edward Williams's translation of "The Fair Pilgrim" is scarce with only this edition located in ESTC (BL and Alexander Turnbull Library). The author of "An Ode to Immortality", John Walters (1759-1789) was Master of Ruthin School, and late Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. His father, John Walters, senior, was Rector of Landough in Glamorganshire. Their publication (which lacks the half-title) is equally scarce, being recorded at the BL, King's Inn, Dublin, Glasgow and NLS only in ESTC. Some browning to the first item and the title-page of the second, otherwise in nice condition.
