THACKERAY (William Makepeace).

Vanity Fair. A Novel Without a Hero. With illustrations on wood and steel by the author.

London, Bradbury and Evans. 1848 First edition. Original blue-grey cloth. 8vo. pp. xvi, 624. Van Duzer 231. A mixed issue with "Mr. Pitt" instead of "Sir Pitt" on page 453, the date 1849 on the engraved title, but without the chapter heading of chapter one in rustic type and without the vignette of Lord Steyne on page 236 which appears in the first issue only. Engraved frontispiece, engraved title and 38 engraved plates and numerous vignettes on wood and steel all drawn by the author. Bookplate of John Watson Ravenshear. Minor repairs to cloth at head and foot of spine, otherwise a nice copy. "Vanity Fair" is uncommon in original cloth.
