HORTON (W.T.).

A Book of Images. Drawn by W. T. Horton and Introduced by W.B. Yeats.

London, the Unicorn Press. 1898. First edition. Original yellow cloth designed by Horton. 4to. pp. 61. Wade 31. 23 illustrations of imaginary landscapes and mystical pieces by Horton - Beardsley said of him "he has a sort of a kind of talent." Signed by W.T. Horton, with the date 1898; afterwards given by Horton to Charles Hiatt (the author of "Picture Posters" 1895) in March 1901; Hiatt's book-plate. W.T. Horton was a follower of the mystical sect "The Brotherhood of the New Life." Horton was displeased by a passage in Yeats's introduction which refers to the Brotherhood as finding "the way to God in waking dreams." An errata slip was produced by the publishers who were asked by Horton to state that "The Brotherhood" claims to be practical rather than visionary and that waking dreams were a purely personal matter. Opposite the title page Horton has written a 10 line note on what the world know of God: "Institutions that have God in them, by their form and spirit, necessarily create. The more divine a man becomes the more secular he becomes. When the feet of God first touched the earth in the incarnate world, He stood up, not the priest, but the artizan [sic]. He went forth, not as prelate, but as healer. That is practically what the world knows of God - all the rest is vision." Also tipped in a two page ALS from Horton to a Mr. MacLean dated March 1900 mentioning an enclosure (not present): "the enclosure is what I feel on the matter - I must do what I feel sharply about or nothing.I had rather be myself and fail then conform and succeed - on earth." Horton concludes by mentioning a book he has in his possession designed by Jules Chéret which may be of interest to MacLean. Also tipped in is the prospectus leaf for "A Book of Images" reproducing one of Horton's mystical landscapes. No. 2 in the Unicorn Quartos. 2 pp. undated advertisements. Covers slightly rubbed and faded, but generally an above average copy.
