London, F.S. Ellis. 1870. First edition. Original dark green cloth. 8vo. pp. [viii]. 329. One of Christina Rossetti's scarcer volumes. The stories were written between 1852-1870 before she embarked on her more devotional works. Ellis intended to print 500 copies, but only 250 were in fact produced. The night before publication Rossetti wrote to Ellis saying 'Pray alter the title page as you suggest.may it aid our sale.I hope the 250 will do no harm.' The story of the title follows the fate of three orphaned sisters. 5 pp. undated advertisements. Spine slightly rubbed, a few small nicks at foot of spine, otherwise a very good copy.
