Paris, Printed by Fr. Ame. Didot, the eldest and sold by J.N. Pissot and Barrois. 1780. First Parisedition with English text. Four volumes in two. Later quarter polished calf, marbled boards, spine elaborately blind-stamped with raised bands, all marbled edges. 8vo. pp. xvi. 379. vi. 384. The second edition in English to be printed abroad after a Dresden edition in 1774. The text benefited from critical attention, Didot collating the text of Murphy's edition of the 'Works' with the text of the last separate English edition. Didot printed 'Tom Jones' in four different formats, this one being an ordinary paper octavo. Small scuff mark to upper cover on first volume and lower cover of the second volume, otherwise a very handsome set.
